DEXA SCAN/BMD SCAN

 

WHAT IS DEXA SCAN ?

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is a means of measuring bone mineral density using spectral imaging. Two X-ray beams, with different energy levels, are aimed at the patient's bones.

 

WHY IS IT DONE?

DEXA scan results can provide helpful details about your risk for osteoporosis (bone loss) and fractures (bone breaks). This test can also measure your body composition, such as body fat and muscle mass.

 

 PRECAUTIONS

You should not take calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your exam. You should wear loose, comfortable clothing, avoiding garments that have zippers, belts or buttons made of metal. And If you have had a barium study wait at least 7 days before having a DEXA scan. If you have been injected with contrast for CT or MRI scan, wait at least 7 days before having a DEXA scan.
